Overview

You should be able to focus on teaching and research, not on keeping servers running. The Systems Engineering & Operations (SEO) team designs, builds, and maintains the servers and infrastructure that departments and researchers across the College of Letters & Science rely on. As a team of full-time specialists, we support everything from a single faculty server to large, high-security shared computing environments, and we keep every system secure, patched, and built to the same standard.

What We Do

  • Managed virtual hosting: Run your applications without worrying about the servers underneath. We provide no-cost, secure, reliable virtual machines and containers for L&S units, and we handle the operating system, monitoring, backups, patching, and lifecycle management.
  • Partnership with the SSCC: Researchers across campus get access to secure, well-supported infrastructure, including high-security environments for restricted and regulated data. We work with the Social Science Computing Cooperative to deliver it.
  • Partnership with departmental IT: Consistent, well-supported systems across departments. We work closely with department support teams on endpoint management and configuration.
  • Configuration management and standardization: Systems that behave predictably. We use baseline policies and automated configuration so every system is built and maintained the same way.
  • Monitoring and reliability: We catch problems before you notice them, with proactive monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning.
  • Vulnerability and patch management: Your systems stay secure without you chasing updates. We work with our cybersecurity group on timely patching, remediation, and fast response to critical threats.
  • Backup, disaster recovery, and continuity: If something goes wrong, your data and services come back quickly. We protect your data and plan ahead for recovery.
  • Compliance support: Meet university and regulatory requirements with less hassle. We align systems with university policy and rules such as HIPAA and federal research security requirements (NSPM-33).
  • Research computing: Researchers get the computing power and specialized environments their work demands. We build and support infrastructure for high-performance and specialized research.
