Systems Engineering & Operations

Overview

The Systems Engineering & Operations team architects, builds, and maintains the server and infrastructure systems that departments and researchers across the College of Letters & Science depend on. As a team of full-time specialists, we support everything from individual faculty servers to large, high-security, shared computing environments. We engineer these systems to a consistent standard and keep them secure and patched, freeing departments and researchers to focus on teaching and research instead of maintaining servers.

What We Do

  • Server and infrastructure engineering: provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management of physical and virtual servers.
  • Partnership with the SSCC: collaborating with the Social Science Computing Core to deliver infrastructure and services for researchers university-wide, including high-security environments for restricted and regulated data.
  • Partnership with departmental support teams: working closely with department support on endpoint management and configuration so systems are consistent and well-supported.
  • Virtualization and data center operations.
  • Configuration management and standardization: baseline policies and automated configuration so systems are built and maintained the same way everywhere.
  • Monitoring and reliability: proactive monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning.
  • Vulnerability and patch management: collaborate with our cybersecurity group to ensure timely patching, remediation, and rapid response to critical threats.
  • Backup, disaster recovery, and continuity planning.
  • Compliance support: aligning systems to university policy and regulatory requirements such as HIPAA and NSPM-33.
  • Research computing support: infrastructure for high-performance and specialized research environments.
